Dexter Ray Lewis came home to north Georgia to take care of Margaret, who was forgetting things in an order that did not make any sense — the recent things last, the sweet things first. Fifty-one apple trees in Harold's orchard, one for every year of the marriage, and she could not name the man who planted them.

There is a cut in the ridge above the orchard the old families called Tsulawé. There is red thread on the trees between the house and the cut, and seven nails driven at the mouth. Somebody has been walking up there at night, and she has been paying for the trip.
